In Singapore, where work moves fast and expectations are always high, many young professionals are starting to realise something, that career growth isn’t so much about skills and experience, but also about who we surround ourselves with.

One of our members, whose business is a headhunting agency, attests to the above.

Many of his high-growth startup clients typically ask for one specific requirement, which is that candidates must have external commitment, be it a project coordinator in a church, or logistical support personnel in Lions Club/Rotary Club. Any clubs and societies, as long as they are willing and able. It is a testament of their tenacity, and outlook in life.

Groups like JCI Marina have been quietly attracting young professionals and business owners who seem to be looking for something a bit different. Not the usual large, transactional networking events, but smaller, more consistent interactions where people actually get to know each other over time. Members meet regularly, usually over a monthly dinner, which sounds simple, but it creates a steady touchpoint.

JCI Marina is a chapter in Singapore under the Junior Chamber International, a leadership development platform for youths to create positive changes - to self, community, and for greater good.

Leadership Training Event organized by JCI Singapore's seniors (through Senators' Club of Singapore) held at Batam Indonesia over 3 days.

There isn’t heavy commitments, which probably helps. Outside of that one monthly dinner, everything else is based on individual's availability. Some members get involved in community projects, some join ad-hoc activities related to Business, Training or International, some just show up when they can. It’s flexible, and that seems to suit people with already packed schedules.

What’s interesting for us is the mix of people. You’ll find managers, entrepreneurs, and professionals from different industries, all in the same space. The common thread is not really what they do, but why they’re there - to exchange ideas, get fresh perspectives, and, in some cases, contribute back to society. Many forged meaningful and long-term relationships too. It’s not overly structured, and honestly, that might be why it works.

JCI Marina is part of the global Junior Chamber International network, which spans more than 100 countries. Not everyone taps into that side of things, but it’s there - and for some, it opens up a wider perspective beyond Singapore.
